Old friends, New adventures

Now that we’re finally in the south of France, it’s time to relax for a few days and do some exploring. As we start pouring over the map of the area, we realise we’re really rather close to Narbonne. And it just so happens that one of us has an old friend who lives in Narbonne. This is too good an opportunity to miss, so we get in touch to see if we can meet up; luckily we can and we quickly make plans!

We have a quiet day in Portiragnes, with walks on the beach which is still a bit damaged by the winterstorms, and a bit of a treat for lunch – rotisserie chicken and chips! Delicious!

After a nice day of rest after the long drive, we meet our friends, Alix and Phillipe, who take us to Sérignan for a gorgeous lunch before taking us to Pézenas; a stunning historic town with beautiful old buildings, artisan shops and boutiques.

The next day, we travel to Narbonne itself to meet up again, and explore Narbonne this time. Many years ago, I heard many stories about this city and now that I’ve been there I know the stories were no exaggerations. It’s a lovely place with a very nice aire for motorhomes too!

After an another lovely day, it was time to move on, not least because we had reversed Rex into a little bollard and needed to find a replacement reversing light… Ouchie! But soon we had found the part we needed and we could continue to Sète. This is also were we say good bye to our friends. Here’s another Huge Thank You for your hospitality, showing us around and making sure we had a fantastic time!

At Sète we stay at ‘des 3 Digues’ aire, which is a little way out of the town itself, by the beach. As it’s rather windy when we arrive, the sandy beach is more of a place of torture rather than relaxation, so we have a quiet afternoon. The next day the sun is out and we jump on our bikes to explore Sète. It’s market day, which means lots of really impressive produce and lots of people! We have a lovely day out; the town is gorgeous with waterside walks, a covered market, an outdoor market, an octopus fountain in the square and nice beaches nearby.

As the weather is improving, we decide to head to another beach resort; Palavas les Flots. This town, in the low season at least, is a lovely, quaint mix of fishing village and tourist resort. The aire at the Marina is more like a motorhome specific campsite, and it was quite busy.

In the morning, the fishing boats arrive back in the harbour to sell their catch on the quay straight from their boats. There are lots of shops and cafes, nice beaches and the place has a nice vibe about it. There is also a big nature reserve with hundreds of flamingos, which was a great surprise for us!

From Palavas les Flots it’s really easy to visit Montpellier by bus, so we stayed an extra night to try this out. Montpellier, as many places in the south of France, still has a lot of Roman history. We saw the old viaduct and we explored the historic quarter.

Next we’re travelling to Arlès to continue on our adventure. That’s for next time!
